What it feels like to miss someone you still have

Missing someone who is still present is one of the stranger experiences I know. You're in the same room. You can reach out and touch them. And yet something has shifted — some small but significant degree of closeness — and you find yourself grieving a version of the relationship that is still technically ongoing.

It can happen gradually. Conversations that used to go deep start staying at the surface. The silences change their quality. You stop sharing the small things because it doesn't feel like the right time, and then the small things pile up and the distance becomes harder to close.

I don't think this kind of missing always means something is broken beyond repair. Sometimes it means something needs attention — a real conversation, more time, a willingness to be honest about what's shifted. Sometimes it just means you're both going through something that is making you temporarily unavailable to each other.

But it's worth naming. The longing for a person who is right there is real, and sitting with it quietly rarely makes it smaller. Sometimes the bravest thing is to say: I miss you, and I'm still here.
